DEC 14 CONFERENCE USA SPECIAL TEAMS PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Southern Miss junior KR Camron Harrell registered the team's first kickoff return for a touchdown this season with a 100-yard return against Florida Atlantic in the team's season finale. His touchdown pushed the Golden Eagle lead back to 14 points at 38-24 in the third quarter and proved to be the winning score. It was the eighth kickoff return in the school's history of 100-or-more yards. Harrell returned three kickoffs for 145 yards and also added six tackles, one for loss, and two pass breakups in the contest. - C-USA Football

Southern Miss wide receiver Tim Jones received a shoutout from Pro Football Hall of Fame receiver Randy Moss on ESPN's, "You Got Mossed." Moss' last name turned into a verb after he became known for leaping above multiple defenders to make improbable catches during his 14 seasons in the NFL. His segment, "You Got Mossed" features receivers who take a page out his book in making impressive grabs, and Southern Miss' all-conference receiver in Jones, who's missed a good chunk of the year battling injury, made the cut this week. Jones jumped high over the outstrecthed arms of 5-foot-11 UTSA cornerback Cory Mayfield Jr. for a touchdown. USM offensive coordinator Matt Kubik weighed in on the play. "He Mossed that guy. I guess that's the popular term these days," he said. - Clarion Ledger

Southern Miss starting quarterback Tate Whatley is doubtful for Friday's game at UAB after landing hard on his throwing shoulder Saturday. Whatley suffered a strained acromioclavicular joint injury on his right shoulder with five minutes left in a 23-20 loss against UTSA on a bizarre play. He was tackled after he caught his own pass attempt that was batted in the air by a UTSA defender. He is listed as day-to-day according to Southern Miss interim head coach Tim Billings. "It doesn't look real good right now to be honest," Billings said. "But we're going to see, but there's a good chance he will not play this week." Whatley finished 22-of-39 for 272 yards, two touchdowns, a fumble and an interception against UTSA. His 272 yards marked a career-high. - Hattiesburg American

Kevin Perkins broke one tackle at the line of scrimmage and spun out of another, scoring his career-high third touchdown of the game as Southern Mississippi rallied past North Alabama 24-13 on Saturday. Two plays after Perkins' third TD, Natrone Brooks snagged his first career interception, setting up a 38-yard Briggs Bourgeois field goal with 1:33 remaining to ice the win. Outscoring North Alabama 17-0 in the fourth quarter, the Golden Eagles (2-5) halted a two-game skid and won their first game at home this season. The win is also the first for interim coach Tim Billings, who is the Golden Eagles third coach this season. Frank Gore Jr. rushed for 103 yards on 13 carries to lead a 245-yard ground game for Southern Miss. The Lions were held to 23 yards rushing. North Alabama (0-3), playing its first game since Oct. 17, nursed a 10-7 lead into halftime after Mike Boykin blocked a 28-yard Bourgeois field goal attempt. - AP College Football

Virginia Tech defensive tackle DaShawn Crawford's 2020 debut lasted two snaps. Crawford spent fall camp dealing with a major knee strain, but didn't want to miss Tech's season opener against North Carolina State. He admitted that was a mistake when he spoke to the media for the first time this season on Tuesday. "I was trying to push myself more than I needed to push myself," Crawford said. "I was being hardheaded. The coaches said, you need to chill out, you need to chill out. But I was being hardheaded. I said, I can go, I can go. And then, got out there, had to come right out." He didn't return to the lineup until Week 4's game against Boston College, and Tech coaches have been careful with his workload. He played 12 snaps in the 40-14 win and 18 snaps in the loss to Wake Forest on Saturday. He still hasn't recorded any statistics this season. Crawford doesn't expect his number of reps will take a big jump this weekend at Louisville even with Jarrod Hewitt serving a first half suspension for targeting. Sophomore Norell Pollard has started alongside Hewitt this season with Josh Fuga, Mario Kendricks and Maxx Philpott rotating in off the bench. "I think it'll still be a gradual work up, because the guys in front of me, they worked the whole camp," Crawford said. "They grinded through the whole practices, they've been playing, so I can't just jump them because they've been doing work." - Roanoke Times

Frank Gore Jr., son of NFL All-Pro running back Frank Gore, had his first breakout game of his collegiate career for Southern Miss. He scored his first career touchdown on a 11-yard run Saturday night in the first quarter, and it only took being in the Golden Eagles' first road game at North Texas to do it. He also had over 100 all-purpose yards after three quarters. Gore Jr. broke the century mark on the ground in the fourth quarter and finished with 23 rushes for 130 yards and one touchdown in a 41-31 victory: Southern Miss' first win of the season. The program has been raving about Gore since he stepped on campus. He came into Southern Miss as their highest-rated prospect. The freshman running back came in with just 23 rush attempts for 78 yards on the season. The 18-year-old originally committed to Florida Atlantic but decommitted from the program once Lane Kiffin left for Ole Miss. - Hattiesburg American

Frank Gore Jr. ran for 130 yards, Jack Abraham threw for a pair of scores and Southern Mississippi beat North Texas 41-31 on Saturday night. Gore's 100-yard rushing game was the first for the Golden Eagles' since De'Michael Harris did it on Nov. 16, 2019. Abram threw a 22-yard touchdown pass to Demarcus Jones and Gore ran it in from 11 yards out to give Southern Mississippi a 14-3 lead in the game's first 4 1/2 minutes. The Mean Green's Tre Siggers capped an 80-yard scoring drive with a 1-yard scoring run with 1:54 before halftime. But Southern Mississippi (1-3, 1-1 Conference USA) drove 46 yards in 70 seconds, and Briggs Bourgeois kicked a 46-yard field goal to put the Golden Eagles up 20-10 at intermission. Mayberry's 4-yard scoring run early in the fourth quarter stretched Southern Mississippi to its largest lead at 34-17. Austin Aune threw for 330 yards and two scores for North Texas (1-2, 0-1). - AP College Football

Southern Miss was one of the worst rushing teams in college football last year, averaging 117.5 yards per game. That ranked 121st out of 130 FBS squads. The Golden Eagles started off on an even worse pace Thursday night, rushing for just 95 yards on 37 carries. Freshman Frank Gore Jr. provided a little stability in his debut, leading the team with 32 yards on 12 attempts. But without a stable rushing attack Southern Miss' offense remains one-dimensional. - Clarion Ledger

Senior Tim Jones returns to lead the Golden Eagle receiving corps as he has increased his catch total in each of his first three seasons, going from five as a freshman to 42 as a sophomore and then 73 last fall. His 110 career catches leaves his 30 shy of the school's career top five as former running back Ito Smith collected 140 grabs from 2014-17 to hold fifth place. Jones collected at least five catches in nine games, including at least seven in each of the final four games last season. - Southern Mississippi Football

Redshirt junior Ky'el Hemby (Abingdon, Md.) highlights the Golden Eagle defense as the top tackler from a season ago. In his junior campaign, Jemby notched 93 tackles with a pair of interceptions to lead the way for the Golden Eagles. Hemby finished second in 2018 in total tackles for the Golden Eagles defense that ended the year No. 3 nationally in total defense (278.4) with 51 stops. He also added a team-best six interceptions, which tied for the league lead. - Southern Mississippi Football

Swayze Bozeman, who is in his second season with program, has already made quite an impression in the program, both on and off the field. He was the program's nominee for the Lowe's CLASS award and made the preseason watch list for the Wuerffel Trophy. Last season, Bozeman tallied 57 tackles with six for loss and 4.5 sacks, to go along with two fumble recoveries and a forced fumble. - Southern Mississippi Football
